Final Fantasy: 64bit to Digital Animation
53Introduction to PlayStation2
I was working in an office downtown in the summer of 1999. The lady I would carpool with was in her middle fifties, children all grown except a teenager. Her son had given her a PlayStation2 for a gift and we would hangout for thirty minutes after I dropped her home and we would play. For three months when my husband got home I would tell him about the PlayStation the game we were working on and some of the obstacles we would go through while playing. some were funny, some aggravating and some unexpected. My husband seeing my interest, bought me a PlayStation2 ("the Black Box") for Christmas that year.
I have always had particular taste in games. I have tried different genre of games like:
- Converted PC games (Myst or Lara Croft)
- First Person Shooter (Time Splitters)
- Racing games (Star Wars Racer Revenge or ATV Off Road Fury)
- Party games (Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero)
I know there are many other genre of games, but the one I enjoy the most is the RPG. (Role Playing Game).
My husband who himself is a PC Gamer, would talk about games and game play with me. If I put in a request for a specific game for Christmas or my birthday, I would get it. I had been interested in Final Fantasy X for a few months. I noticed it during the summer of 2002 and the price was $85.00 before tax. I thought maybe the price would reduce, like some of the others do, and I could get it for my birthday in the fall. The game stayed at that price and the price was not dropping for the holidays. My husband had been watching the game as well and gave into my patience and bought It for me for Christmas. (I went to Frye's for another game the next summer and it was still at $85.00.) I played every chance I got for the holiday week between Christmas and New Year and have been hooked ever since.
I loved the animation standard, the wacky sense of humor, The mix of Shinto and Catholic philosophy and the movie clips were the best I had seen up to that point. I will admit I haven't played X-2 or higher, but what I did instead was to go back and get the PlayStation compatible games from Final Fantasy up to Final Fantasy X Which are as follows:
- Final Fantasy
- Final Fantasy 2
- Final Fantasy 4
- Final Fantasy 5
- Final Fantasy 6
- Final Fantasy 7 with Cloud
- Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerebus with Vincent Valentine
- Final Fantasy 8
- Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy 1 and 2 come as Final Fantasy Origins for PlayStation. I found it is possible to save your progress if you get a memory card for a PS1 and use it with the PS2. They are backward compatible. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 3 does not exist for PlayStation2, but there are essentially two Final Fantasy 7s as Cloud and Vincent Valentine are contemporaries as seen in the movie Final Fantasy7: Advent Children. Which is a pretty good movie and helps to explain the new direction of the game since Final Fantasy 4 and the importance of Gaia. For more information on Final Fantasy Series click here.
